For most of history, cities have been the epicenter of innovation and ambition.
But the physical location is not what makes cities like NYC, London, and Tokyo great.
Rather, it's the density of creative ideas and interesting people.
Decentralized Cities
With the rise of the internet and Web3, cities no longer need to be limited to a certain geographical location.
In fact, according to a report from UpWork, remote work is completely disrupting where people are choosing to work and live.
Here are the key findings:
Remote work will increase migration in the U.S.: Anywhere from 14 to 23 million Americans are planning to move as a result of remote work. Combined with those who are moving regardless of remote work, near-term migration rates may be three to four times what they normally are.
Major cities will see the biggest out-migration: 20.6% of those planning to move are currently based in a major city.
People are seeking less expensive housing: Altogether, more than half (52.5%) are planning to move to a house that is significantly more affordable than their current home.
People are moving beyond regular commute distances: 54.7% of people are moving over two hours away or more from their current location, which is beyond daily or even weekly commuting distances for most.
Housing market data confirms that the highest priced markets are taking the biggest hits: Rental data from Apartments.com reveals that the top 10 percent of most expensive markets saw a 13% percentage point larger decrease in rent prices than rental markets in the bottom 10 percent.
The allure of traditional cities is beginning to fade.
Enter Cabin DAO
The co-founder of Cabin DAO Jonathan Hillis defines a decentralized city as:
"A network of distinct physical locations tied together by shared governance and culture".
And Cabin DAO is building a decentralized city for online creators. The community is developing shared culture, economy, and governance across a global network of physical locations.
Cabin is a network of neighborhoods owned and operated by its members.
The network is designed as a DAO that manages itself with on-chain governance and protocols.
This network is made up of three types of members:
Residents: People who spend time living/working in the neighborhoods
Neighborhoods: organizations that own/operate properties in the network
Contributors: service providers that power the Cabin network and economy
The first neighborhood in the Cabin ecosystem is in the Texas Hill Country roughly 45 minutes outside of Austin.
"Node 1" includes a 4-suite shipping container as well as a 1250-square foot cabin.
The DAO Structure
The community is supported by the ₡ABIN token.
₡ABIN serves three purposes:
Access
Governance
Neighborhood onboarding
DAO members mainly make a living by contributing to Guilds. These Guilds serve as a talent network for Cabin related projects. There are currently four guilds:
Meta Guild
Writer's Guild
Product Guild
Placemaker's Guild
These Guilds work towards completing bounties in order to earn ₡ABIN.
Here is a list of current bounties available for Guilds to complete.
The Future of Cabin DAO
Cabin DAO has both a ten-year goal and a one-year goal.
Ten-year goal: Build a decentralized city for independent online creators
One-year goal: build an embassy for DAOs.
This 2022 goal will be accomplished in three steps:
Establish embassies/ambassadorships to foster collaboration across the DAO ecosystem
Host conferences, retreats, and events to bring DAO operators together IRL.
Build products that support the development of the DAO ecosystem.
These short-term and long-term goals are ambitious.
But if successful, Cabin DAO will reinvent how cities are structured and could provide the framework to decentralize the world.
